8 Life-Changing Lessons from The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene

The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene has been heralded as one of the most important books of our time. Filled with illuminating stories and timeless wisdom, it lays out 48 laws that explain the strategies used by powerful people throughout history to overcome their enemies and achieve success in all aspects of life, from politics to business to romance. To read it is to understand power—and to see how those who embrace these laws find true strength in every aspect of their lives. Here are 8 life-changing lessons from The 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene.

From the Introduction

Power is everywhere; it cannot be avoided. You can’t escape it, and you can’t defeat it. It is pervasive and universal, yet remains largely unnoticed. If you want to win at politics, love, or life itself, power is what you need. And if you want to keep power once you have it...well...that’s why there are 48 laws in all. -- Robert Greene

The book is about how to achieve power and what to do once you have power. It seems like it should be obvious but many fail to see that in order to have real control, over yourself or others, there must be some form of power in place. This book will help you build a foundation for understanding how to operate using existing laws that govern human behavior. There are no new laws or rules being added, but rather they simply lay out techniques on how to exploit these existing rules in our lives.

Law 1 - Never Outshine the Master :

If your master brags to you, let him boast. Do not tell him that he is wrong. If your master cries, do not laugh at him; instead sympathize with him and if possible put a stop to what caused his tears. In all things obey your master and never contradict or censure him (Greene 166). People have different definitions of power but one thing is for sure, having power over someone else will benefit you in many ways than it will for them. A powerful person does not need to be feared or hated because there is nothing a less powerful person can do about it but in order to stay powerful, that person must be respected because otherwise people may plot against them and take their power away.

Law 2 - Never put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn how to use Enemies :

People are unpredictable and therefore dangerous. When dealing with people, it is essential to remember that they will always let you down. You cannot rely on them, but they can be extremely useful. In order to use them for your own purposes, you must learn how to turn enemies into friends, and friends into enemies. Turn your acquaintances into allies who are dependent on you for their success and prosperity; it is harder for them to attack you if they depend on you in some way for security or success in their careers or business affairs. People have a strong need to belong; use that craving as leverage against them when necessary.

Law 3 - Conceal your Intentions :

Keep people off-balance and in the dark by never revealing the purpose behind your actions. If they have no clue what you are up to, they cannot prepare a defense. Guide them far enough down a wrong path, envelop them in enough smoke, and by the time they realize your intentions, it will be too late. When you are able to force your enemies into changing their plans at any moment—while you consistently execute your own—you gain immense power. Your confused and disoriented opponents will fall like wheat before a scythe.

There are two things to remember about keeping people off balance: First, always pay attention to their weaknesses and use it against them. And second, never be straightforward when deception will do. You don’t have to lie; simply leaving a false impression is often enough. Remember, you are not trying to trick people—you are merely giving them a new perspective on things that allows you to control them better. This is not manipulation in any negative sense of the word; it is merely persuasion. If used correctly, it need not be underhanded or immoral because your motives are pure and your goal constructive.

Law 4 - Always Say Less than Necessary :

When you are trying to impress people with words, the more you say, the more common you appear, and only common people are impressed by commonness. So it is not what you say, but what you don't say that counts. It is not what you do, but what you don't do that reveals who you really are. Talk is cheap; show me an example where someone says something powerful or compelling...they keep their mouth shut or they use as few words as possible. You're like a comedian doing a walk-on bit for 30 minutes when 4 lines would've done just fine. No one cares about your experience because that's just an opinion.

Law 5 - So Much Depends on Reputation—Guard it with your life :

It doesn’t matter how beautiful your theory is, it doesn’t matter how smart you are. If people don’t know about it, it’s useless. Reputation is everything—guard it with your life. There are two ways to go about establishing a reputation: You can convince people you are worth listening to or establish credentials that make people want to listen to you—status, credentials, and reputation being interchangeable here. Status comes from being in demand and having access to valuable resources (usually money). Credentials come from formalized training or accreditation. Either way, reputations take time and effort to build—but once they are established they have a tendency of becoming self-reinforcing over time.

Law 6 - Court Attention at all Cost :

Refuse to be ignored. Make yourself stand out in a crowd, then use that power to control your environment. Become a lightning rod for controversy and tension and people will be drawn to you. While learning how to start a business may not have an immediate impact on your life, at some point soon you’ll be glad you did it. When people are constantly seeking your attention, they’re forced to pay attention to what you want them to pay attention to—be it your status updates or company brand itself—meaning others will stop paying attention when you're ready for them too. Law 9 - So Much Depends on Reputation - Guard It with Your Life: There is only one reputation that matters – yours (or your company's). Protect and enhance it.

Law 7 - Get others to do the work for you, but Always Take the Credit :

In order to get power, you have to give it away. When you are trying to get things done, it is always better if others do them for you, so that they build up a sense of obligation towards you. However, even though they are doing all the work while putting themselves in debt to you, make sure not to give them any credit! They will have a great sense of pride and achievement knowing that they accomplished something wonderful without giving them any recognition. After all, no one likes to feel like a tool. It would be much more satisfying for everyone involved if we did all that hard work behind their backs and then came out as a hero in front of everyone else who thinks our idea was brilliant because we’re such a smart guy or gal!

Law 8 - Make Other People Come to You :

This works best if you are already somewhat well known in your circles. If people know you, they will make an effort to come and see you; knowing that it will be worth their while. But even if you are not famous yet, there is still much to be gained here. The first step is to get them talking about you—and remember that it is far better for them to talk about you in a positive light than a negative one! Find ways of making others gossip about you (but don't lie). Of course, ideally, they should spread something good and true rather than something bad and false. And once they have talked with you, they will associate great memories with your name.
